What is Acebutolol?

Acebutolol (pronunciation: ace·boo·tuh·laal) is a medication that treats high blood pressure and irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia). It is important to manage your blood pressure to prevent serious medical conditions that arise with prolonged hypertension.

This medication belongs to the class of drug called beta blockers. Medication in this class block certain substances (like adrenaline and other stress hormones) from affecting your heart and raising your heart rate and blood pressure.

Dosage

This medication is taken orally and can be taken at any time of day with or without food. Your healthcare provider may start you at a beginning dose of acebutolol at 400 mg per day. This may increase depending on your reaction to the medication. The maximum dose of acebutolol is 1200 mg per day.

You may also be required to take this medication in separate doses. Try to take your medication at the same time each day to avoid missed doses.

This medication has only been approved for use in patients over the age of 18.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

These side effects are not serious and will most likely only occur for a short period as your body adjusts to the medication.   • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Slow heartrate
  • Headache
  • Constipation/diarrhea

Serious Side Effects

These side effects are much rarer but could indicate a serious health complication. Speak to your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
  • Swelling ankles/feet
  • Fainting
  • Mood changes
  • Prolonged nausea/vomiting
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • Unusual weight changes
  • Vision changes

Note: Suddenly stopping acebutolol can cause blood pressure to spike and may lead to chest pains or even a heart attack. Speak to your healthcare provider if you wish to stop taking this medication.

Interactions

Before starting this medication, make sure you have informed your prescribing physician of all the medications you currently take. Some medications that may interact with or affect the efficacy of acebutolol are:

  • NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen)
  • Nasal decongestants
  • Reserpine
