Amlodipine (Calcium Channel Blocker): Doses, Uses, and Side-Effects

Amlodipine: What is it for?

Amlodipine is used for treating high blood pressure. It belongs to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers that help to relax blood vessels so blood can flow easier. It also helps to relieve chest pain (angina), especially when it is brought on by exercise. However, it should not be used to treat chest pain when it occurs.

The medication may also be referred to by its full name amlodipine besylate (pronunciation am·low·di·peen beh·sil·ate.) This medication is also offered in combination with other medications if one medication does not suffice to lower your blood pressure. Some of the combinations include:

  • Amlodipine valsartan (Eforge)
  • Amlodipine benazepril (Lotrel)
  • Amlodipine atorvastatin (Caduet)
  • Amlodipine telmisartan (Twynsta)

Doses

This medication is prescribed based on your medical condition and responsiveness to the medication. Adults are typically prescribed amlodipine 5 mg once daily. A dose usually will not surpass a 10 mg tablet. This medication can be taken with or without food at any time of day.

This medication has also been approved for pediatric use. Doses for young children will be determined by weight. Those under 17 may receive amlodipine 2.5 mg to 5 mg per day.

Always follow your healthcare provider’s guidance on how to take your medication and be sure to follow the label instructions.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

These side effects are not serious and occur in more than 1 in 100 (1%) people on amlodipine. They are usually only temporary. However, if these side effects interfere with your day-to-day life or last longer than a few days, speak to your healthcare provider.

  • Headaches
  • Feet swelling
  • Flushing
  • Heartbeat that feels stronger than normal
  • Dizziness

Serious Side Effects

These side effects are rarer (occurring in less than 1 in 10,000 people). However, if you experience any of the following side effects you should speak to your healthcare provider as soon as possible:

  • Severe stomach pains with nausea and vomiting
  • Yellowing skin and/or whites of the eyes

Interactions

The following medications may affect the way amlodipine functions and could lower its efficiency or increase your risk for side effects:

  • Medications that treat HIV or hepatitis C
