Ethacrynic Acid (Edecrin)

What is it?

Ethacrynic acid is used for managing high blood pressure and fluid buildup (edema). This medication is part of a drug class known as diuretics, also referred to as a “water pill (diuretic).” This means the medication acts on the kidneys to increase urine production and flush out excess sodium.

Ethacrynic Acid Dosage

The typical starting dose for adults over the age of 18 is 50 mg daily. For those ages 2 to 18, the starting dose is typically 25 mg daily. This may change depending on your condition and response to the medication.

Use of this medication is not recommended for infants.

Ethacrynic Acid Side Effects

Common Side Effects

These side effects are mild and usually short-lived as the body adjusts to the medication. If any of the following side effects become bothersome or last more than a few days speak to your pharmacist or healthcare provider:

  • Dizziness
  • Stomach pain
  • Muscle cramps
  • Diarrhea
Serious Side Effects

These side effects are rare but could indicate serious health complications. Speak to your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Dehydration (e.g., confusion, extreme thirst, decrease in urine production, severe dizziness, fast/irregular heart rate)
  • Easy bruising/bleeding
  • Vertigo
  • Hearing changes
  • Yellowing of skin/eyes
  • Blood in stool or vomit (coffee ground consistency)
  • Allergic reaction (e.g., rash/hives, swelling in face/throat, difficulty breathing)

Interactions

Some medications are known to affect the way ethacrynic acid works or increase your chance of side effects. Speak to your healthcare provider about any current medications and new medications you may begin taking while on ethacrynic acid.

Some medications that may interact with ethacrynic acid are:

  • Desmopressin
  • Furosemide
  • Lithium
  • NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen)
  • Other medications that affect blood pressure
  • Medications that affect your sodium or potassium levels
Ethacrynic Acid and Alcohol

Alcohol can interact with ethacrynic acid to increase dizziness. Alcohol also affects your blood pressure and heavy drinking can lead to heightened blood pressure. If you choose to drink, be sure to not exceed the daily recommended limit of 1 unit/day for women and 2 units/day for men.

Ethacrynic Acid Cost

On average, Edecrin costs $853.79 for a 1-month supply of 25mg tablets. This average drops to $770.72 for generic ethacrynic acid, still an impossible price for most to afford on a monthly basis.
