Further, two people die every minute in the United States from cardiovascular disease (CVD).</p><p>The CDC also reports that “about 655,000 Americans die from heart disease each year” – that’s 25% of all deaths. To put it into perspective, Americans have a 1 in 6 chance of dying from heart disease, and 1 in 7 from cancer compared to 1 in 92 from an opioid overdose and 1 in 107 from a motor vehicle accident.</p>

However, a new online survey conducted amongst 400 cardiologists, endocrinologist, primary care practitioners and pharmacists survey suggests that there may also be a health benefit for patients as well!</p>

<p>When it comes to long-term maintenance medication to manage chronic illnesses, 84% of those surveyed agreed that prescribing in 6- and 12-month quantities could increase patient’s adherence and management of their chronic condition. In terms of safety, 89% of physicians and 72% of pharmacists felt that writing these types of medications would be safe to patients.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom:5px;">Among physicians surveyed, they agreed that longer fills of medications would lead to:</p>

<h3>Risks of Longer Fills</h3>

<p>Longer fills aren't perfect and do present some potential risk or problems for patients as well.</p><p>For example, if the medication was not effective for the patient 92% agreed there would be leftover medication and 87% acknowledged that there would be no cost reimbursement for that unused medication.</p>

<p>51% of those surveyed also felt that refilling medications may be more difficult to remember as it isn’t being done as frequently.</p>

<p>65% also agreed that there is a risk that patients may not store the medication properly.</p>

<h3>Most Physicians Would Write Longer Prescriptions…If They Could</h3>

<p>In fact, 93% said they would write for a 6-month supply and 78% said they would write for a 12-month supply.</p>

<p><strong>So why don’t they?</strong> This has a lot to do with the rules set in place by insurance companies and healthcare plans in the U.S. Typically there is a quantity limit set for medications that allows up to a 30-day or 90-day fill. Other times insurance companies will create rules/pathways patients must go through, called <a href="https://www.marleydrug.com/blog/are-prior-authorizations-good-for-patients" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">prior authorizations</a>.</p>

<p>In this survey, 77% said that insurance limits refills to 30 days for some medications, 91% agreed that insurance companies can alter their choice of medication(s) for their patients.</p>

<p>Getting regular exercise is extremely important for your heart! Physically active individuals have a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular disease incidence and a 36% lower risk of death due to cardiovascular disease compared to inactive individuals. This pressure allows blood to be circulated throughout the body and provides oxygen to all of the body’s organs. Systolic blood pressure is the pressure exerted when blood is pushed into the arteries. The normal range for systolic blood pressure is 120 mmHg or lower. Diastolic pressure is the pressure blood exerts within the arteries between heartbeats. The normal range for diastolic pressure is 80 mmHg or lower. Keeping your <a href="https://www.marleydrug.com/blog/why-is-it-important-to-manage-your-blood-pressure">blood pressure</a> within a normal range is very important for your health as a whole. Having a blood pressure too low can result in your organs not getting enough oxygen as the blood is not pumping to them effectively. Having a blood pressure too high for a prolonged period of time can cause heart problems due to the long-term force of the blood against your arteries.</p><p>The 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee determined that engaging in aerobic, dynamic, or combined exercise training has significant average effects on systolic and diastolic blood pressure, causing an average decrease of 3 mmHg in both. More frequent and a higher volume of physical activity could improve 24-hour blood pressure and risk of progression of heart disease in mild-moderate risk patients.</p><h3>Can exercise lower cholesterol?</h3><p>Cholesterol is a substance found in the blood that comes from the liver or the food you eat. Ideally, you want low levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) as this is what builds up in your arteries and causes blockages, and you want high levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) as this helps get rid of LDL.
