Amiloride (Midamor)

What is it?

Amiloride (Midamor) is used for managing high blood pressure, treating heart failure, reducing fluid buildup (edema), and treating low potassium levels (hypokalemia). Some healthcare providers may also prescribe amiloride for hypomagnesemia (low magnesium levels) caused by Gitelman’s or Bartter’s syndrome.

Amiloride belongs to the drug class “diuretics,” more commonly known as “water pills.” These medications increase urine production to get rid of excess salt and water.

Amiloride Dosage

Typically, your healthcare provider will give you a starting dose of amiloride 5 mg per day. This can be taken with or without food. Your prescription may change depending on your condition and responsiveness to the medication.

Prescriptions for children are determined by the healthcare provider based on weight.

Amiloride Side Effects

Common Side Effects

These side effects are mild and usually short-lived as the body adjusts to the medication. If any of the following side effect become bothersome or last more than a few days, speak to your pharmacist or healthcare provider: diarrhea, weight loss, headaches, dizziness, nausea

Serious Side Effects

These side effects are rare but could indicate serious health complications. Speak to your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Severe stomach pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Numbness/tingling in hands, feet, or lips
  • Mood changes
  • Dehydration: dry mouth, muscle cramps, weakness, fast heartbeat, confusion, fainting, seizures

Interactions

Some medications are known to affect the way amiloride works or increase your chance of side effects. Speak to your healthcare provider about any current medications and new medications you may begin taking while on amiloride.

Some medications that may interact with amiloride are:

  • Lithium
  • Medications that increase potassium: potassium supplements, ACE inhibitors, cyclosporine, eplerenone
  • NSAIDs: ibuprofen, naproxen
  • Triamterene

This medication may also increase potassium levels. Limit foods with a high concentration of potassium, such as bananas, and orange juice to reduce the risk of hyperkalemia.

Amiloride and Alcohol

Alcohol can interact with amiloride to increase dizziness and impair judgment.

Alcohol also affects your blood pressure and heavy drinking can lead to heightened blood pressure. If you choose to drink, be sure to not exceed the daily recommended limit of 1 unit/day for women and 2 units/day for men.

Amiloride Cost

The average price for a 1-month supply of amiloride 5 mg is $24.94.
