Irbesartan (Avapro) for Hypertension

What is Irbesartan (Avapro) for?

Irbesartan (Avapro) is a medication used to treat high blood pressure. It can also be used to treat diabetic kidney disease by reducing the amount of protein you lose through your kidneys.

Avapro is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), which is a class of drug that blocks certain natural chemicals in the body from acting on the blood vessels. This allows them to relax and for blood to flow easier.

Dosage

The average dose of irbesartan is 150 mg daily, however, your prescription may be increased up to 300 mg daily.

Prescriptions for children under 6 are calculated by the healthcare practitioner based on the child’s weight.

Note: This drug is known to cause serious fetal injury and even fetal death. If you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant while on this medication, speak to your healthcare provider about a change in treatment for your high blood pressure.
