Olmesartan (Benicar)

Olmesartan (pronunciation: ol·muh·saar·tn) is an oral tablet medication used to treat high blood pressure and reduce the risks of health complications that arise with prolonged stress on the heart and arteries

Olmesartan belongs to the class of drug called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). This means the drug works by blocking certain natural chemicals in the body from restricting blood vessels, reducing stress on the heart and artery walls, and allowing blood to flow easier.

Dose

The typical starting dose of olmesartan is 20 mg per day. This may be increased by your healthcare provider depending on your reaction to the medication. The maximum dose is usually no more than 40 mg per day.

For children under 16 years, dose is determined by the healthcare provider based on weight. Use of this medication is not recommended for children under 1 year old.

Note: This drug is known to cause serious fetal injury and even fetal death. If you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant while on this medication, speak to your healthcare provider about a change in treatment for your high blood pressure.
