Blood Pressure

HypertensionARB

Telmisartan (Micardis)

What is it?

Telmisartan (pronunciation: tel·muh·saar·tn)—brand bane: Micardis—is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and reduce your chances of strokes, heart problems, and kidney problems that high blood pressure may lead to.

Telmisartan belongs to the drug class called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). These medications work by blocking certain natural substances in the body that cause blood vessels to constrict, reducing strain on the heart and allowing blood to flow easier.

Dose

The average dose of telmisartan pills is 40 mg daily. This may be adjusted depending on how you respond to the medication. Telmisartan maximum dose is typically no more than 80 mg per day.

Use is not recommended for children as there has not been sufficient studies to prove safety and efficacy.

Note: This drug is known to cause serious fetal injury and even fetal death. If you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant while on this medication, speak to your healthcare provider about a change in treatment for your high blood pressure.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

These side effects are mild and usually short-lived as the body adjusts to the medication. If any of the following side effects become bothersome or last more than a few days speak to your pharmacist or healthcare provider:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Flu-like symptoms (cough, runny nose, etc.)

Serious Side Effects

These side effects are rare but could indicate serious health complications. Speak to your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Fainting
  • Vision changes
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Painful urinating/more frequent urinating
  • Swelling in hands and feet

Telmisartan Withdrawal Symptoms

Stopping telmisartan suddenly can cause blood pressure to spike and cause a number of unpleasant side effects (headache, nausea, anxiety) as well as increase your risk of a stroke or heart attack.

If you decide telmisartan is not the best treatment for you, speak to your healthcare provider about tapering off and introducing alternative treatment to manage your blood pressure.

Interactions

Some medications are known to affect the way telmisartan works or increase your chance of side effects. Speak to your healthcare provider about any current medications and new medications you may begin taking while on telmisartan.

Some of the medications that may react with telmisartan are:

  • Aliskiren
  • Lithium
  • Ramipril
  • NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, naproxen)
  • Medications that increase potassium
  • Other medications to lower blood pressure or have the side effect of lowering blood pressure

Cost

On average, telmisartan 40 mg price is around $131.99/month.
