What is Enalapril?

Enalapril (pronunciation: uh·na·luh·pril) is a medication that is used to treat high blood pressure and reduce the risk of strokes and heart failure. Enalapril is also known by the brand names Epaned and Vasotec. It is part of a drug class called ACE inhibitors. These medications work by blocking a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to constrict and allow blood to flow more freely. Enalapril is also used with other medications to treat congestive heart failure.

The starting dose of enalapril for blood pressure regulation in adults is 5 mg per day. This might vary depending on your responsiveness to the medication. The maximum dose of enalapril is 40 mg per day.

Enalapril is approved for pediatric care for children over the age of 1 month. Doses for children will be determined by the healthcare provider based on the child’s weight.

This medication is available in tablet and liquid form.

How to Take Enalapril

Enalapril can be taken at any time of day with or without food. It is typically prescribed as an oral tablet however it can also be prescribed as a liquid. If you are prescribed the liquid version, your prescription will come with a plastic syringe to help you measure the correct dose.
