ZYPITAMAG is a third-generation statin that is used with diet and exercise to lower cholesterol in adults.
ZYPITAMAG is a moderate-strength statin and reduces LDL-C by up to 45% at its maximum 4 mg dose.4-6
What makes ZYPITAMAG effective even at lower doses (2 and 4 mg) is its strong binding affinity to HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that produces cholesterol. In fact, among all statins, ZYPITAMAG binds most strongly to this enzyme.

70-80% of medicatons, including many statins, are metabolized by the CYP450 enzyme family. When multiple drugs use the same CYP450 pathways, it can lead to drug interactions.
ZYPITAMAG is mainly processed by UGTs, a less busy group of enzymes. This reduces its potential to interact with other medications that rely on the CYP450 pathway.
Interestingly, CBD is also metabolized by CYP450 and can increase the levels of some statins in your blood, potentially raising the risk of side effects. This effect depends on the amount and frequency of CBD use.

A study compared atorvastatin and pitavastatin in people with high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.3
While both medications were similarly effective at lowering cholesterol, pitavastatin (4mg) had a much smaller impact on blood sugar levels. Pitavastatin increased fasting glucose by only 2.1% from baseline, whereas atorvastatin (20mg) raised it by 7.2%.

Statins can increase the risk of new-onset diabetes, but the extent of this effect can vary. ZYPITAMAG (pitavastatin) has been associated with a lower risk of new-onset diabetes compared to other statins.
Pitavastatin (2 to 4 mg), rosuvastatin (5 to 10mg) and atorvastatin (10 and 20mg) were compared for their effects of new onset diabetes in patients with a recent myocardial infarction.8

Statins are known to reduce CoQ10 levels. This is because the same enzyme (HMG-CoA) statins block to lower LDL-C is involved in CoQ10 synthesis. Lower CoQ10 levels can affect the mitochondria in muscle cells, potentially reducing their energy output. This may explain why some people taking statins experience muscle pain and fatigue.
ZYPITAMAG has a smaller effect on the mevalonate pathway compared to other statins. In a head-to-head study, 4 mg of pitavastatin led to a 7.7% drop in CoQ10, while 20 mg of atorvastatin caused a 26.1% decrease. Both reduced cholesterol effectively, but pitavastatin had a gentler effect on CoQ10.
| LIPITOR 20 mg | ZYPITAMAG 4 mg | |
|---|---|---|
| LDL Reduction | -40.7% | -42.8% |
| CoQ10 Impact | -26.1% | -7.7% |
| Muscle Side Effects | More frequently reported | Less frequently reported |
