<h3>Risks of Longer Fills</h3>

<p>Longer fills aren't perfect and do present some potential risk or problems for patients as well.</p><p>For example, if the medication was not effective for the patient 92% agreed there would be leftover medication and 87% acknowledged that there would be no cost reimbursement for that unused medication.</p>

<p>51% of those surveyed also felt that refilling medications may be more difficult to remember as it isn’t being done as frequently.</p>

<p>65% also agreed that there is a risk that patients may not store the medication properly.</p>

<h3>Most Physicians Would Write Longer Prescriptions…If They Could</h3>

<p>In fact, 93% said they would write for a 6-month supply and 78% said they would write for a 12-month supply.</p>

<p><strong>So why don’t they?</strong> This has a lot to do with the rules set in place by insurance companies and healthcare plans in the U.S. Typically there is a quantity limit set for medications that allows up to a 30-day or 90-day fill. Other times insurance companies will create rules/pathways patients must go through, called <a href="https://www.marleydrug.com/blog/are-prior-authorizations-good-for-patients" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">prior authorizations</a>.</p>

<p>In this survey, 77% said that insurance limits refills to 30 days for some medications, 91% agreed that insurance companies can alter their choice of medication(s) for their patients.</p>

<p>Depression is classified as a mood disorder that may be described as feelings of loss, anger or sadness that interfere with one’s everyday activities. An estimated 1 in 15 adults (6.7%) experience depression in a given year. </p>

There is also a high degree of heritability (approximately 40%) when immediate relatives such as parents or siblings have depression. </p>

<p>There are many factors that can affect one’s risk of developing depression. These can be biochemical, medical, social, genetic or circumstantial in nature. Some common risk factors include:</p>

<h3><strong><a href="https://www.marleydrug.com/blog/different-types-of-depression">Depression types</a></strong></h3>

<p>There are 2 major types of depression that differ by symptom severity and persistence. </p>

<p><span style="font-weight:600; color:#4b94a9;">Major depressive disorder (MDD):</span> This is the more severe form of depression and is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness and worthlessness that will not go away on their own. In order to diagnose someone with clinical depression they must experience 5 or more of the following symptoms over a 2-week period:</p>

<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Feeling depressed most of the day</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Significant weight loss or gain</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Loss of interest in most regular activities</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Excessive sleeping or inability to sleep</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Slowed thinking or movement</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Fatigue most days</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Feelings of worthlessness or guilt</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Loss of concentration or indecisiveness </li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Recurring thoughts of death or suicide </li>

</ul>

<p><span style="font-weight:600; color:#4b94a9;">Persistent depressive disorder (PDD):</span> This is a milder form of depression but it is more chronic. In order to be diagnosed with this disorder your symptoms must be present for at least 2 years. Since these symptoms last longer than MDD, it can have a larger impact on your life. It is very common for people with PDD to lose interest in normal daily activities, feel hopeless, have low self-esteem and lack productivity. </p>

<p><span style="font-weight:600; color:#4b94a9;">Postpartum depression:</span> This is in a category of its own and usually refers to depression after childbirth. Postpartum depression affects 1 in 9 new parents. Surprising to most, <strong>this can affect both men and women</strong>. The symptoms usually appear 3-6 months after birth and if they last longer than 2 weeks you may be experiencing postpartum depression. Including the symptoms already listed previously you may also experience:</p>

<ul>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Having thoughts of hurting the baby or yourself</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Not having an interest in the baby as if your baby is someone else’s</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Having memory problems</li>
<li style="margin-bottom:5px;">Withdrawing from friends and family</li>
</ul>

<h3><strong>Depression medication</strong></h3>

<p>Along with other treatments such as psychotherapy (talking to a therapist), medications are often prescribed to help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with depression. These include:</p>

<p><span style="font-weight:600; color:#4b94a9;">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs):</span> These are the most commonly prescribed <a href="https://www.marleydrug.com/blog/ssri-and-snri">antidepressants</a> because they tend to have fewer side effects. They treat depression by increasing the availability of the neurotransmitter's serotonin (happiness chemical). <h2><strong>Signs and Symptoms of GAD:</strong></h2>

<p >GAD is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by long-term anxiety, excessive worry, tension, and dread, even when nothing has occurred to trigger or provoke it.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom:5px;">GAD is marked by physiological and physical symptoms that persist for over 6 months and include:</p>

<h2><strong>How is GAD Diagnosed?</strong></h2>

<p>Symptoms must be present most days of the week for at least 6 months in order to receive a diagnosis of GAD. GAD is diagnosed with a mental health screening completed by your doctor or mental health professional. You may answer self-report questionnaires regarding your symptoms and how long you’ve had them, such as the <u>Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7</u>, which will help your doctor identify the precise diagnosis and <em>severity </em>of GAD. Diagnosis may also include:</p>

<h2><strong>What Causes GAD?</strong></h2>

<p>In many cases, a combination of factors can contribute to the development of GAD.</p>

<li style="margin-bottom:20px;"><strong>Biological factors</strong>: Differences in brain chemistry and function.</li>

<li style="margin-bottom:20px;"><strong>Psychological factors</strong>: Particular personality traits can increase your risk of GAD. For example, being emotional or a distressed person, sensitive/fragile, having difficulty enduring irritation/annoyance, and having a personality that strives for flawlessness. Additionally, those that are more negative, have a timid character or tend to evade danger.</li>

<li style="margin-bottom:20px;"><strong>Family history</strong>: Genetics play a role in GAD when individuals have a history of mental health problems in their family.</li>

<li style="margin-bottom:20px;"><strong>Health conditions</strong>: Thyroid issues or heart arrhythmias.</li>

<li style="margin-bottom:20px;"><strong>Traumatic events</strong>: You may have an increased risk of developing GAD if you have experienced a severe life change that has caused nervousness, including grief, childbirth, or workplace-induced trauma. If you have experienced any form of abuse, such as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, you may be more at risk of developing GAD.</li>

<h1><strong>Treatment Options for GAD</strong></h1>

<p>Treatment options are dependent on how much GAD is affecting your ability to function in your daily life. Various types of medications are used to treat GAD.</p>

<h4 style="color:#5ba2b6;"><strong>1. Antidepressants</strong></h4>

<p>Antidepressants are used as <em>first-line </em>medication options to treat GAD and relieve symptoms.
